Australian Ashleigh Gentle took victory at the 2015 Noosa Triathlon - her third win in the past four years - while 2014 USA Triathlon Champion Joe Maloy won the men’s race.

This year’s triathlon saw a change of course with the swim leg held at the beach for the very first time, rather than in Noosa’s network of canals.

A series of dramatic events in the women’s race left several top contenders out of the action. Natalie Van Coevorden was disqualified after taking a wrong turn on the bike course and leading the field back to town. Crowd favourite Emma Moffatt and Radka Vodickova were each handed three minute penalites for drafting during the bike leg, leaving a tough task to make up the lost time.

To Moffatt’s credit, she finished strongly in fourth place despite the penalty, just over four minutes behind Gentle.

In the men’s race, American Joe Maloy crossed the line first following a strong bike leg and solid run. Somewhat reminiscent of Craig Walton’s off-the-front approach at Noosa in the past, Maloy broke away on the bike and hung tough through to the finish.

Aussies Ryan Fisher and Jacob Birtwhistle completed the men’s podium.

A special mention must go to 83 year old Markus Hanley, who celebrated his birthday today with a 6:12:17 effort to complete the race.
