Gils Galavant Backyard Ultra

Gil’s Galavant is an outback backyard ultra held at Treville Downs, a fifth-generation cattle property north of Wallumbilla in Queensland’s Maranoa region.

Staged on Saturday 11 April 2026, the event invites runners to experience a remote working property setting while taking on one of endurance running’s most demanding formats. 

Created as a tribute to Gilbert Cleland, who cared for the property for 60 years, the event blends physical challenge with a strong connection to the land and the spirit of outback Queensland.

Rather than offering fixed race distances, Gil’s Galavant follows the classic backyard ultra format, where runners complete a 6.71km loop every hour on the hour until they can no longer continue.

The course features about 30 metres of elevation gain per lap and covers a mix of grass, sandy loam, seasonal creek beds and gravel, with sections through paddocks, around a dam and into Kangaroo Creek.

The winner is the last person to complete a loop within the hour, making the total distance depend entirely on how long each runner can last.
